Money in the landfill? Think before

recycling reduce and reuse

Did You Know You Might Be Throwing Money Away !

Did you know that some laser printer cartridges are worth over $20.00 each? Many people are throwing money down the drain. I'll tell you how you can make money or even start a part or full time business. The cartridge remanufacturing business is growing by leaps and bounds. There are now Franchises setting up businesses across the US By the thousands. Empty ink and toner cartridges are in high demand and the demand is growing rapidly even some of the small ink cartridge empties are selling for $6.00. Some empty toner cartridges are worth over $20.00.

There are companies that specialize in buying empty toner cartridges. You can easily find them by doing a search on Goggle or any Search Engine. Just type in Cartridge recyclers and several will show up. Some of the companies will even give you a business plan and tell you the best methods for collecting the empties. Typically they will buy in small or large quantities. Sign up is free and they will have a price list that you can print out. This is one business that you can start with virtually no money.

Not all cartridges are suitable for recycling. Type one has the print head built into the cartridge this is the one to collect as they are the expensive ones suitable for recycling .You can tell these by the brass colored electronics on the back of the cartridge and the brass colored print head Type two is just a plastic container with a sponge in it. Ink is injected into the sponge these are very inexpensive to produce and several companies make compatible cartridges that is very inexpensive. Hewlett Packard and Lexmark are the main one that you will need to find. Lexmark makes many printers for other companies like Compaq and Xerox for example. So these are the good ones also The ones to ignore are Epsons, Brothers, most Canons and some Xerox cartridges. I have found one company that takes Epson's.

So far we have been talking mostly about ink cartridges. There's probably more money to be made in recycling the toner cartridges. These are the cartridges used in laser printers and many businesses use as well as some home printers almost all of these are recyclable. You can get a list from the company you sign up with. You can companioned with a recycling company to stockpile and recycle empty printer inkjet cartridges, and empty toner cartridges from laser printers and copiers. For every empty cartridge that is sent, you will receive you payment and usually All shipping supplies and fees are pre-paid by the recycling company so there is no cost to you.

Nearly a million "empties" are thrown away in the United States every day, so they shouldn't be hard to find. Don't hesitate to be creative! Here are a few examples of how some people have gotten involved. A member in Ohio ordered a tabletop baggie aerosol dispenser and printed several of them She made a small display in the waiting room of her dentist's office promoting awareness and support . A family in New Jersey has been gathering empty toner cartridges and inkjets from the local school district. There are several buildings in the district and they all use printers and copiers. They collect the empties every week or so from the schools and send them in. To date, they have gathered and shipped ended 1,000 empties! Several people have taken collection boxes to their work place. Generally, people are very supportive of the recycling effort and are excited to participate.

Why recycle cartridges? Recycling unceasingly large amounts of plastics outof landfills. Every year over 300 million cartridges are thrown away. This means for year-end cartridge, about 2.5 pounds of plastic is thrown into a landfill. It will never go away! Recycling saves natural resources. To imagine a single new laser cartridge, over 3 quarts of oil are used. In contrast, a recycled cartridge only requires 1 quart of oil to be able to be reused. Recycling saves two quarts of oil per cartridge. This year alone, toner cartridge remanufacturing will save over eleven million (11,000,000) gallons of oil.

Plastic Not Going Anywhere

By Jorina Fontelera

Despite the outcry against plastics, recent studies show that the plastics industry will continue to thrive and introduce technological advancements along the way.

Plastic is everywhere. From grocery bags to water bottles to dashboards to airplanes, plastic is entrenched in our daily lives. Plastic makes our lives safer and more convenient, but it also drains petrol reserves and tops-up landfills.

Approximately 7.1 billion pounds, or 76 percent, of plastic bottles in the United States ended up in landfills in 2007. That same year, Americans consumed more than 29 million tons of plastic but recycled a paltry 2 million tons (7 percent). (Source: The Boston Globe)

Because of environmental issues and health concerns, plastic has gotten a bad rap lately. In 2008, the plastics industry faced approximately 400 pieces of anti-plastic legislation in the U.S., according to the Boston Globe.

How long will the negativity towards plastics keep up? How will it affect the future of the plastics industry? Are people really going to cut back on plastic use?

no bag.jpg

Currently, several cities and even entire countries have imposed or are considering bans and taxation on plastic bag use: China passed a ban on plastic bags under 0.025mm thick in January and effectively shuttered the country's biggest plastic bag manufacturer, which used to produce 250,000 tons of bags annually; Ireland imposed a tax on plastic bags in 2002; Australia plans to impose a ban this year; and 33 London councils are planning on banning ultra-thin bags and taxing other plastic bags in 2009, The Guardian reports.

In the U.S., San Francisco banned plastic bags last year and New York City requires shops by law to provide bins for recycling plastic bags. In January 2009, Seattle will charge a 20-cent fee on plastic bags.

Yet, while the passing of more anti-plastics legislation would certainly put a wrinkle in the plastics industry, demand for plastics is not exactly diminishing.

By 2010, the plastic film and sheets market is expected to expand to 50.8 million tons, Global Industry Analysts, Inc. says. And according to a July study by the Freedonia Group, plastic film demand in the U.S. is projected to grow 2.6 percent annually to more than 16 billion lb. through 2012 and have a market value of nearly $32 billion.

For all the bans and taxes, plastic film use for retail bags and stretch and shrink wrap is anticipated to grow most rapidly, the research firm estimates.

Recycling empty inkjet cartridges

How Do I Recycle My Empty Inkjet Cartridges by Kishor Nayak

Each year, millions of empty toner and inkjet cartridges are thrown into the trash, ending up in our planet's landfills or incinerators. Recycling these empty cartridges is easy, profitable and environmentally beneficial. It helps reduce solid waste, conserves raw materials and the energy needed to produce a new product. Most cartridges can be recycled up to six times - they are refurbished, refilled and then resold to consumers at a lower price than new branded cartridges. Recycled cartridges produce the same quality and output as new cartridges.

Ink cartridges are constructed out of plastic, petroleum-based products and take about 1,000 years to decompose. According to recent estimates, 20-40% of ink cartridges are recycled, meaning 60-80% end up in landfills. The recovery and reuse of empty printer cartridges diverts millions of cubic feet of material from waste disposal, saving us the millions of tax dollars needed to pay for additional landfill management.

Look at the instructions in the box of your new laser or inkjet cartridge to find out how to recycle your old one. Many companies will provide instructions, packaging materials and free postage if you wish to recycle your old cartridge.

The easiest way to find a recycling location is to search the Internet for organizations that accept used cartridges in exchange for cash. All sites offer pre-paid free shipping or pickup of used cartridges, and some pay up to $4 per cartridge.

Recycling used cartridges also makes a great fundraiser for schools, church groups, charities, high school sports teams and other non-profit organizations. It can also be a significant cost savings for businesses.

Several inkjet printer manufacturers also maintain recycling programs. However, your recycled ink cartridge doesn't always make it around the loop.

Epson, in cooperation with Funding Factory, recently launched a free recycling program for its customers. Schools and businesses can get points for collecting and remitting empty cartridges to Epson. However, the cartridges are not remanufactured or refilled. They are incinerated. To be fair, mention must be made that the incineration is at an environmentally friendly waste-to-energy plant; however, it's easy to see that Epson is the big winner in this recycling effort. Their recycling plan takes cartridges out of the hands of remanufacturing plants that can offer less expensive remanufactured compatible cartridges to the consumer.

Hewlett Packard also has a free recycling program and they proudly announce that more than 1.8 million HP inkjet cartridges were recycled in 2003. Unfortunately, for the consumer, plastics and metal from the HP cartridges are also disassembled and made into new products. Other components are "used to generate energy or are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner."

Canon offers its customers several options for recycling toner cartridges, including a single return option, an up-to-eight multiple return options, and a bulk return option. Whichever you choose, a shipping label can be downloaded directly from their website. Return shipping via UPS is pre-paid by the company. It appears from many recycling and other eco-friendly programs displayed on their website, that Canon is a leader in environmental stewardship, however to date they have no recycling program in place for inkjet cartridges.

Lexmark's recycling program is 100% free, as are the other printer manufacturer recycling programs. Customers request a kit using an online order form. Lexmark pays the postage both ways.

However, there is one major difference between Lexmark's program and the programs of the other print giants. Lexmark works with Planet Ark and Close the Loop in Australia to ensure every collected cartridge is remanufactured or recycled. In addition, they have similar recycling programs in Latin American and South Africa. In Europe, every purchase of a Lexmark high-volume cartridge comes with a postage-paid recycling bag included. Now that's closing the circle!
